UNIVERSITY
BERTRAND
JOHNSTON

YESTERDAY.
TODAY.
TOMORROW.

The city wants to use Bertrand Drive as a proof of concept for future projects (Johnston Street)

Let's learn from the University Avenue mistakes - before it's too late.

Help us protect mobility, access, and local businesses.

Our Mission

To support a safer, more accessible, and more beautiful Bertrand Drive by preserving efficient vehicular access while enhancing access for cyclists and pedestrians.

As the businesses, residents, and property owners who have called this corridor home for decades, we believe safety, mobility, and beautification can be achieved without sacrificing the existing turn lane, restricting customer access, or imposing zoning changes that undermine the long-term viability and value of established businesses.

We support improvements that enhance the corridor while protecting the neighbors, businesses, and jobs that have helped Bertrand Drive thrive for generations.

Reasons We Oppose The Current Proposal

Disproportional Allocation
of Public Roadways
Expropriation of
Private Property
Restrictive Zoning
Road Diet

We oppose the current Bertrand Drive proposal because we believe it prioritizes a costly road diet and restrictive zoning overlay at the expense of safety, accessibility, and economic vitality.

The plan removes the existing center turn lane, narrows vehicle travel lanes, overallocation of public roadways to pedestrian traffic over vehicular traffic, seizes private property, and introduces zoning changes that could negatively impact the long-term viability of established businesses that depend on safe and convenient vehicular access.

As residents, property owners, and business operators who have invested in this corridor for decades, we believe Bertrand Drive can be beautified and enhanced without reducing traffic safety, limiting customer access, or undermining the businesses and neighborhood that make this corridor successful. We support a balanced alternative that improves pedestrian and bicycle connectivity while preserving safety, accessibility, property rights, and economic growth.

Feedback We've Recieved

From the Community, Neighbors, Business Owners, Employees, Customers, and Patients:

  • The design, implementation, and "fixing" of University Ave is objectively bad

  • Tired of frivolous spending of taxpayer dollars

  • Better use of public funds toward schools, Johnston St or other failing infrastructure

  • Lack of transparency

  • Installations of medians affecting safe and efficient left hand turns

  • Raised curbs

  • "Psychological" traffic calming

    • narrowing lanes, raising curbs, reducing visibility with tree lines

  • Trying to apply New York solutions to problems we don't have in Lafayette

    • LCG hired a consultant from NYC to apply densely populated urban streetscaping to Bertrand

  • Expropriation of private property

Center Turning Lane

  • Provides a dedicated space for turning vehicles, reducing conflicts with pedestrians, cyclists, and through traffic

  • Reduces rear-end crash risk by allowing vehicles to exit the travel lane, prevents car stacking and side swiping

  • Supports access to businesses, neighborhoods, and medical offices while providing critical maneuvering space for delivery, service, and emergency vehicles
